I’m Hungry…
I have spent a lot of time thinking about this humble-tumble-blog. It’s gone through various stages, from being about anything, to being about my photos, to being about everything and anything again.
Out of everything though, the thing that seems to come up most of all here is food!
I love to cook, I love to take photos of my food, I love looking at photos of other people’s food, learning new skills, being inspired for new recipes.
I have found this blog to not only be a great way of creatively expressing my love for and adventures with food, but also tumblr has turned out to be an amazing source of inspiration. Recently I have been following some amazing vegan, vegetarian and japanese food blogs which have provided a huge amount of inspiration for my recipes lately.
Recently I have gone through a lot of changes in my attitude to food. It’s partly been brewing, partly due to friends inspiring me, partly due to doing a lot more research and reading about food, and partly due to the fact that I have recently moved to one of the best places in the country to find a variety of fantastic locally produced food.
Old habits die hard, so I am not putting too much pressure on myself, but I do very much want to change the way that I eat. I am concerned about my health, your health, the sustainability of food, pollution of the earth and animal welfare. If this is something that you have not considered you might be very quick to dismiss what I am saying, I understand because I used to think that way too. But the more I look into it, the more convinced I am that very broadly speaking the future of the world as we know it is on our plates.
I guess that over time I will talk more about some of these issues, I am not an expert, but I am keen to become one.
My thoughts, views and desires will, I am sure, evolve over time, but for now I am wanting to change my lifestyle when it comes to food in the following ways:
- Eat a more plant-based diet
I don’t think I could ever completely give up meat, it’s a beautiful thing and, I believe, a gift from God. However, I do believe that we were never meant to eat so much of it. The increased demand for meat has meant that it is produced in an industrial way which is bad for the environment, does not respect the animal, and does not produce quality meat. Therefore I want to drastically reduce the amount of meat and animal-based foods that I am eating, and when I do eat animal based foods make sure that it is from a local producer who cares about the animal’s welfare (feeds it on a natural diet, lets it live as close to a natural life as possible, treats it with respect) and quality of the product. - Catch and eat more fish
I love fishing and am extremely fortunate in that I love by the sea. I want to catch and eat more fish within my diet. Eating fish has many health benefits and is in many ways a lot more nutritious for you than eating meat. By catching fish myself, not only does it mean that I only catch what I need, I will also be general catching extremely sustainable fish such as Mackerel. This is great for me and great for the environment! - Eat local food as much as possible
I am in a place now where I firmly believe that eating food produced locally is a wonderful thing. Not only will I be reducing my CO2 emissions by not flying produce from around the world, but I will also be supporting the local economy and independent producers who actually care about delivering a quality product, not to mention the added nutritional value of having fresh, ripe, untampered with produce! - Cut out the refined and processed foods
It’s no secret that processed foods are no good for you. By it’s very nature processing food is about taking something in its natural state and making it something, well, very unnatural. This is something that is going to be a challenge in many ways, but I think I will get there. In this day and age processed foods are all about convenience, so it’s going to require a bit more effort on my part to instead, take raw natural ingredients and make things from scratch. I will also need to source more wholefoods and wholegrains, refined carbohydrates will need to be become a thing of the past.
I know that making these lifestyle changes aren’t going to be easy, but I have been heading in this direction for a while and some stuff is really starting to stick. I genuinely believe that for me, this is about slowly changing my lifestyle for good, rather than doing something radical and it ending with a binge!
So, for now, this will be a new chapter for this humble-tumble-blog. I intend to officially make this blog all about my food adventure. It will be a place where you will find photos of my food, recipes, thoughts, inspiration, etc. I will spend some time on changing the appearance of the blog and making it look a bit nicer over the coming days and weeks.
If you made it to the end of this post, then well done!
Thank you for following me, and I hope that by me making this blog more focused, you will get more out of it, and I will be able to make something more of it.
Love you guys.
